Choosing Your Child’s Dentist is Like Choosing Their Pediatrician
Instilling good habits early, in an environment that’s enjoyable, is essential for a lifetime of good oral health. From a young age, children's teeth can be susceptible to cavities. Consider these factors:
Children aren't able to brush well by themselves. Because of this, it is important for parents to be involved in their child’s daily dental care. This promotes both thorough cleaning and the development of proper dental habits. Little kids tend to eat more frequently during the day (grazing). This results in a prolonged exposure to acid (every time you eat you make acid), which may cause more cavities.
Exposure to food and juice acids is greater when a tooth is improperly cleaned. This acid often speeds up the development of cavities. The good news is that identifying poor dietary and hygiene habits, along with applying a fluoride varnish to the mineralizing teeth, will significantly reduce the chance of your child developing a cavity.
The Easy Way to Prevent Childhood Tooth Decay!
We know that kids don’t often do a good job of brushing their teeth. This can even apply to adults! Even meticulous brushing may not reach the deep grooves in the back teeth. This results in bacteria, acids, and plaque formation, which will lead to decay. Once a tooth has decay, it is damaged permanently and will require a filling or crown.
What if there was a way to help prevent all this from happening? Fortunately, there is! The application of dental sealants is the answer.
Here’s how it works:
- The tooth (or teeth) is cleaned and sterilized.
- A thin plastic coating is applied. This is normally white or clear in color.
- A curing light is applied to the sealant to adhere it into place.
- The whole procedure takes just minutes and requires no shots or drilling, nor the removal of any tooth structure.
The application of dental sealants is one of the best preventive measures both children and adolescents can do to preserve their natural teeth!
Reduce the Worry of a Knocked-Out Tooth!
Without proper protection, many childhood sports can be extremely hazardous to your child's mouth. Did you know that 5 million teeth are knocked out each year in the United States alone? The one-size-fits-all mouthguards found in stores don’t fit well and can impair your child's breathing while running during sports. On the other hand, a custom-made sports mouthguard fits perfectly, protects correctly, and can be worn for any sport.
